Chronicling Your Pet's Life With StoryCombs

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them." - John Grogan, Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog

If one of your family members is of the furry, feathery, fishy, or otherwise non-human variety, you’re in good company. According to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), sixty-seven percent, or approximately 85 million families in the United States own a pet.

Pets enrich our lives in many ways, from providing companionship and support, to teaching us how to be responsible and reminding us that there is joy in life, laughter, and little things. They are family and as such, in this age of technology, you may find that your smartphone is full of pet selfies, pet with kids pics, and, of course, candid pictures of your pet caught doing silly things! All of which is wonderful...but not necessarily the best way to keep a record of something as special as your pet’s life with your family.

With the StoryCombs app, you can create a curated album of milestones and favorite pictures and stories of your beloved pet. You’ll be able to add to and share your pet photo album on the StoryCombs app whenever you’d like, with anyone you’d like. It’s a great way to chronicle the life of your pet. We’ll show you how to get started!

Gather Up Your Pet Photos

The first step to chronicling your pet’s life using the StoryCombs app is collecting all of your pet pictures from storage (smartphones, tablets, photo albums, social media pages) and putting them all in one place so that you can go through them to find the photos that you want to include in your album.

Once you have collected all of your pet photos, you’ll want to sort through them to see which ones you want to include in your StoryCombs pet photo album.

A few tips and considerations when selecting the pet photos that you wish to include in your album:

  • Don’t be discouraged if some of your pet photos are “old school” prints. Just make a “copy” of them by snapping a picture of them using the camera on your smartphone, then upload them to your album. You can also use a scanner or photo digitizing service.

  • Most social media apps have a download option for posted images that you can use to create a “copy” on your phone that you can then use in your album.

  • If you didn’t take the photo that you wish to use, make sure that you have the photographer’s permission to use it, as some images are copyrighted and may require a fee and/or attribution to use.

  • Weed out any blurry, similar, or duplicate images that you come across. This also frees up more space on your devices for new pet photos!

Organize Your Pet Photos

How do you want your pet photos organized? Do you want to create one album for all of your pets over the years and add stories as they crop up?Alternatively, you might create one album per pet, if you’ve only had a few pets over the years. Or, create one album for cats, and one for dogs, for example.

As shown in the following image taken in the StoryCombs app, I’ve arranged my cat Feist’s photos chronologically, from kittenhood to adulthood, with her more recent photos on top (because I am sure that I will want to add additional images as time goes on).

Here are several additional suggestions for how you can organize your pet photos in your pet album:

  • Annual Birthday/Adoption “Gotcha” Day photos

  • Annual vet exam date photos (with record of immunizations, surgeries, growth, etc.)

  • Favorites (foods, toys, places, people)

  • Same day every month photos

  • Seasonally

  • Holidays

Note: By default, the app places your photos in your album in the order that you load them, so if you want your more recent pictures at the top, load them last.

Create Your Pet Photo Album in StoryCombs

Once you have your pet photos sorted and organized to your liking, you’re ready to create your pet photo album. Check out our blog post, Collect Halloween Memories With StoryCombs, for step-by-step instructions on how to set up your album and upload your photos in the StoryCombs app.

As you save each photo in the app, you can add narration to tell the story behind the image. You could even record yourself with your pet and capture their unique bark, squeak, squawk, or meow! Whatever you choose to add, video narration is a great way to add detail that brings your album to life in a way that lets your pet’s personality shine through.

Share Your Pet Photo Album

Hooray! You’ve created an organized and easily accessible and updatable album containing all of your important stories and photos of your pet! You’ve created a place where your pet’s milestones and vet records alike can co-exist in digital harmony. Now you can share your awesome creation with the other human members of your family/Hive. (We’re sure your pet would approve.) Learn more about StoryCombs Hives and how they work here in the post below.
